| Abstract | Assessed the efficacy of a virtual training environment (VTE) to train police personnel (ViPOL) for complex collaborative tasks and the extent to which knowledge, skills, and attitudes acquired could be transferred to a real situation. VTE ViPOL was compared to standard training methods and a control group. Reaction to training, learning at an individual level and knowledge transfer in a real situation, behavioral changes, and results were assessed. Findings showed that both the standard and virtual training groups outperformed the control group. The standard training group showed an advantage in reactions and learning over the other two groups following training. Standard-trained individuals had more motivation, greater perceived value of the training and greater knowledge following training than the VTE group. However, in the complex-reality task, the VTE group outperformed both groups in terms of learning transfer, and recorded higher scores in satisfaction with their training and with their performance. In conclusion, VTE ViPOL can successfully be used to train police personnel for complex collaborative situations that cannot be trained for in reality and may even lead to better performance in a real task than personnel prepared with standard training methods. In addition, it appears that evaluating the efficacy of a training method at the team rather than the individual level may be effective, particularly with virtual training models. (ZPID). |
