| Abstract | Investigated the extent to which students' (academic) boredom coping profiles depend on perceived causes of boredom. 446 college students (mean age 22 years) completed the Precursors to Boredom Scale (PBS) and the Boredom Coping Scale (BCS). Results of a latent profile analysis confirmed 3 boredom coping profiles: reappriasers, criticizers, and evaders that were originally identified by U. Nett. Significant group differences were found for each of the 8 individual precursors to boredom: the experience of being over- or under-challenged, the experience of monotony, lack of meaning, lack of involvement, opportunity costs, general boredom, and teacher dislike. Findings indicate that as the number and intensity of causes of boredom increase, students become more inclined to cope with their boredom through avoidance coping strategies (e.g., as evaders). Students who viewed their boredom as relatively chronic (e.g., as a personality factor) were unlikely to choose more effective coping strategies (e.g., as reappraisers). (ZPID). |
