| Abstract | Discusses and evaluates number line training as a tool in children's mathematical education. 27 studies on number line training, including paper-pencil approaches and board games, computer-supported trainings, socially interactive number line trainings, and embodied number line trainings are reviewed. A brief overview of computer-supported trainings, from very circumscribed number line trainings to multicomponential training programs is presented. The adaptivity of socially interactive learning environments which aim to provide interactive and competitive number line trainings is highlighted. Mechanisms need to be implemented that guarantee balanced success rates in multi-learner trainings. Otherwise children with difficulties in mathematics may lose motivation as a result of being continually outperformed by other players. The development of trainings which allow for the bodily experiences of numerical concepts such as the mental number line are expected to be particularly fruitful. Media devices such as the Kinect sensor and tangible user interfaces show promise in supporting children's understanding of numerical quantities and their manipulation. (ZPID). |
