| Abstract | Examined the automated identification and assessment of virtual communities of practice (vCoPs) that can serve as learning environments for students. Research questions for this correlational study focused on tool validation, CoP characteristics, and the identification of appropriate dialog partners in student-centered open learning environments (SCOLEs).179 faculty members (aged 25-80 years) from an online university participated. Automated dialog analysis of participants' interventions was performed with the tools ReaderBench and Important Moments. This was contrasted with results from independent (human) coders who employed a critical-thinking assessment framework (CTAF) for their analysis. Results suggest that both tools are appropriate for the assessment of community discourse in academic vCoP and the identification of productive discussion partners. These tools can indicate which vCoP are appropriate for students to engage in a meaningful, knowledge-enhancing dialog as well as identify those members who would be able to provide the appropriate expertise in responding to questions.
