| Abstract | Evaluated the effectiveness of an attachment-based intervention for improving maternal sensitivity (the Ulm Model) in mothers at risk of abuse and neglect. 28 mothers (mean age 21 years) in the control group received standard services only, while 55 mothers (mean age 23 years) in the intervention group took part in a 3-month long early prevention program 'A Good Start to Life' provided by practitioners in the health care and youth welfare systems. Mean age of infants at 6-month follow up was 6.3 months. Assessment measures included the CARE-Index, the Developmental Test 6 Months to 6 Years (ET6-6), the Risk Indices Around Birth (RIAB), an adapted version of the Schneewind questionnaire on social support, a socio-demographic questionnaire, and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Results showed some improvement in infant emotional development from the intervention. Sensitivity among the mothers-at-risk in the intervention group was also somewhat improved, particularly those at higher risk for child mistreatment. However, this improvement was moderated by risk status of the mother-infant dyad and the effect was no longer observed at the 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Further studies using larger samples and comparing different models of intervention are recommended. (ZPID). |
