| Abstract | Studied the effects of attachment and depression symptoms on risk behaviors in adolescents previously affected by war. 551 Ugandan adolescents (aged 13-21 years) were assessed with the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Adverse Childhood Exposure questionnaire (ACE), the Stressful War Events questionnaire (SWE), the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-37 for Adolescents (HSCL-37A), and the Youth Self-Report (YSR) regarding aggressive and rule-breaking behaviors, substance use, suicidal behavior, and sexual risk behavior. Results from hierarchical logistic regression analyses revealed three major findings. First, only maternal attachment moderated the link between depression symptoms and multiple risk behaviors. Second, depression symptoms were surprisingly linked to increased multiple risk behaviors among those reporting higher levels of maternal attachment. Third, low maternal attachment was found to be a protective factor against high depression symptoms. Findings help clarify the role of differing levels of maternal attachment on depression symptoms and risk behaviors in postwar adolescents. (ZPID). |
