Abstract	Investigated whether the appearance of virtual agents in a Web-based learning environment affects learning motivation and performance. 108 psychology students (mean age 20 years) participated in this virtual tutoring program which was part of an obligatory statistics course. Students were randomly assigned to a young female, older male, or no agent featured in a total of 23-25 cases accompanying the lectures and providing elaborative feedback. Students completed the Agent Persona Instrument (API) at the end of the course. Results revealed that the agent's characteristics influenced student motivation but had essentially no effect on performance. Learner's interest in the subject was boosted by the virtual female agent, while their performance slightly improved under the male agent. Moreover, there was essentially no difference in performance results between the agent and no-agent groups. Limitation of the study were discussed including the fact that the agents lacked a realistic appearance. (ZPID).
