| Abstract | Examined the effect of academic language demands in mathematics test items on language minority students compared with monolingual students in elementary school. A total of 2,796 third-grade students (mean age 9 years) and 26,016 fourth-grade students (mean age 10 years) completed 126 test items which varied in length and linguistic complexity. Participants completed the mathematics assessment part of (the norming study for) the German National Assessment Study and provided information regarding socioeconomic status. Explanatory item response models, specifically hierarchical generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) were employed to analyze the data. Results indicate that the impact of academic language demands was related to grade level rather than students' language background. Evidence suggests that both minority and majority students made some progress towards overcoming the challenges posed by mathematical language demands over the course of one school year. Further research to examine how academic language demands in test items and in classroom instruction affect language minority students longitudinally over a longer period is suggested. (ZPID). |
