Abstract	Provides a detailed description of the development of the Assessment of Students' Attitudes towards Studying (ASAtS) and presented arguments to validate ASAtS as a useful instrument to combine the assessment of students' attitudes about their higher education institution (HEI) with their attitudes about teaching, learning, and the studying process. The authors first provide a literature review of earlier assessments of student learning processes and social-psychological theories explaining student attitudes. They then describe their work to broaden the scope of research on student development and present their current research. Students at universities in Switzerland, Sweden, and Germany completed the ASAtS questionnaire. Results generally confirmed the internal consistency of the ASAtS. Interactions with other constructs including study performance and intrinsic motivation added support for its nomological validity. In conclusion, the authors contend that ASAtS extends the scope of research on the theory of student learning beyond its previously narrow bounds, especially by offering an instrument to measure students' perception of their HEI.
