| Abstract | Examined the impact of childhood experiences on adult financial literacy. Face-to-face street interviews were conducted with 530 middle-class individuals (mean age 35 years). The interview incorporated 12 childhood variables organized into five different scales. Participants' financial assets were assessed (e.g., diversification). Results indicated that financial socialization by the parents, through encouraging saving and budgeting, directly lead to higher financial literacy. Formal schooling including better education and economics instruction led to better numeracy which also improved financial literacy. Moreover, findings showed that financial socialization through experience with work and money in adolescence had an unexpected negative effect on financial literacy in adulthood. Further studies using structural equation modeling, an enlarged set of variables explaining financial literacy, and an extended assessment of financial behaviors was suggested. Training courses should consider the family and educational background of the target group, in addition to providing approaches that stimulate regular savings and investment habits through easy-to-understand advice.
