Abstract	Activation work has only recently evolved from being primarily administrative into a more professional field. Frontline managers set the standards for what is expected of activation workers' professionalism and may be invaluable in guiding their professional development. This article, therefore, explores the relationship between frontline managers' public leadership behaviour and activation workers' professional behaviour, which are both multidimensional concepts. Survey data were collected from a convenience sample of 129 Dutch activation workers at the end of 2022. A multivariate multiple regression subsequently shows that perceived public leadership behaviour is indeed related to activation workers' self-rated professional behaviour, but not to all professional behaviours, and in different directions. The findings suggest that frontline managers seek a balance in activation professionalism to help activation workers navigate and rethink conflicting logics in professionalism. We outline avenues for further research and implications for the frontline management of activation professionalism.
