| Abstract | This article explores the potential of the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Germany to play a more active role in protecting academic freedom and supporting threatened scholars worldwide. We use a mixed-methods approach including expert interviews, document analysis, a case study, and experiential knowledge to sketch out the contours of UASm engagement within the narrow space defined by the logic of 'academic humanitarianism'. Our research findings point to three key areas of organisational development: (i) the recruitment of at-risk scholars, (ii) institutional capacity building, and (iii) pathways for long-term collaboration and career development for exiled scholars at UAS.
