| Abstract | The paper reconstructs experiences of students who used individual accommodation in form of Disadvantage Compensation (Nachteilsausgleich) at a German university, based on 36 biographical-narrative interviews that were analysed using Grounded Theory methodology. The authors identify eight stages of Disadvantage Compensation that students must go through to obtain accommodation. At each of these stages, students face different challenges that may constitute barriers and lead to experiencing exclusion. Therefore, the authors argue that individual accommodation is rather (re)producing exclusion by creating new barriers than providing sufficient inclusion. To improve the effectiveness of individual accommodation as a measure of inclusion, universities need to implement a centralised organisation of Disadvantage Compensation and ensure adequate training of staff. In addition, inclusive learning environments and course participation opportunities need to be created, to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.(HRK / Abstract übernommen). |
