(Autorinnen). This article examines empathy as a key professional competence in speech and language therapy and situates it within broader teaching and learning contexts of professional education. Starting from its relevance for therapeutic relationships, communication, and patient-centred practice, empathy is conceptualized not merely as a personal trait but as a competence that can be taught and learned. In this respect, the paper also addresses a topic of relevance for educational contexts, as empathy plays an important role in profession-related teaching and learning processes, in the shaping of interaction, and in the reflective development of professional dispositions. The article outlines the functions of empathic competences in speech and language therapy and discusses the didactic implications for education, academic training, and curriculum development. It presents approaches for systematically integrating empathy into teaching and curricula and for further developing existing content and methods toward empathy-, communication-, and health-literacy-sensitive professional education.
