(DIPF/Orig.).

The development of interests is an essential component of development of personality of children and adolescents, which is embedded in the German educational standards ("Bildungsstandards") for physics. Existing studies indicate that education in physics has thus far achieved only limited success in promoting the development of interests. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of interest in physics lessons, it is necessary, according to the Person-Object Theory of Interest, to precisely characterize both the object and the person. This study focuses on the person and utilizes, in addition to gender, the drives toward empathizing and systemizing thinking based on the Empathizing-Systemizing Theory for the characterization of individuals. Prior to conducting empirical studies on these two drives, this work describes the abbreviation and adaptation of an existing measurement instrument for capturing these drives, which is subsequently applied in four studies. Initially, gender and drives toward empathizing and systemizing thinking are used to model interest in ten different school subjects, before a subsequent study focuses on the subject of physics and the choice of elective physics courses in secondary education. Path modeling reveals that a drive toward systemizing thinking has a strong influence on the interest in physics, which in turn affects the choice of physics courses. In comparison, gender has only a minor impact on interest in physics and course selection in secondary education. The variance in interest in physics explained by the drive toward systemizing thinking in addition to gender is higher than that explained by gender alone. These findings suggest that physics teaching might not adequately cater to the drive toward empathizing thinking and may be perceived as less empathizing than other subjects. A further study examines this situation by quantifying the proportion of perceived empathizing educational elements in physics lessons. It is shown that when students perceive physics lessons as empathizing, their interest in physics is significantly higher, regardless of their own drive toward empathizing thinking. It thus seems advisable to integrate empathizing educational elements into physics lessons to provide all students with access to physics and the opportunity to develop their interests. A concluding study explores an initial approach by reformulating the contexts of the ROSE study in an empathizing or systemizing direction, investigating the resulting differences in interest. It is again shown that formulating contexts in an empathizing direction leads to significantly higher interest in those contexts. (DIPF/Orig.).
