This article provides a systematic overview of key developments, theoretical positions, and current fields of research in music education in German-speaking countries. It begins with a brief outline of historical developments - from the ancient concept of mousike as a matter of education to 19th-century school singing lessons and to the Kestenberg reforms of the 1920s up to the criticism of a sort of mousike-based music education in the 1950s, which was accused of perpetuating certain aspects of National Socialist ideology. The article then turns to the decade after 1968, when Adorno's Critical Theory and social upheavals influenced music education. Music as a subject now underwent a transformation from the mousike-oriented "primacy of singing" to arts-oriented analysis of musical works and the "primacy of listening". "Musikdidaktik" now became established as music education in the sense of the science of music-specific teaching and learning. Quantitative empirical research (later qualitative research as well) on music education experienced a strong upswing. Around the year 2000, the academic discourse opened up to a praxeological understanding of music as a diverse cultural practice. This led to a pluralistic discourse in which different legitimations of music education - such as aesthetic, anthropological, or cultural-theoretical - compete and coexist with one another. This article further outlines central approaches to the philosophy of music education, categories of goals and content, and models of competence. It situates music education within a broad spectrum of empirical, historical, theoretical, and praxeological research approaches. It becomes clear that music education faces the challenge of systematizing and empirically substantiating the diversity of its theoretical references. The continual re-legitimizing of music as a school subject in the face of increasing educational policy challenges - both theoretically and empirically - remains a primary task. |
