| Abstract | Assessed the influence of childhood mistreatment (CM) on the development of thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy to test the hypothesis that CM is a risk factor for maternal hypothyroidism in pregnant women. Pregnant women completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) to determine their experience with CM. Levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) in maternal serum were measured in each trimester of their pregnancies. Findings revealed a relationship between mothers' exposure to CM and increased concentrations of TSH across the entire pregnancy, and risk levels for elevated TSH concentration 4-7 times higher than the accepted trimester-specific clinical cut-off values. No difference in fT4 concentrations could be confirmed between women with clinically increased TSH concentrations and women with normal TSH concentrations, possibly indicating subclinical hypothyroidism. The authors suggest that findings support a robust, clinically relevant elevation in the risk of hypothyroidism during pregnancy among women who were victims of CM. They emphasize the importance of recognizing the role of CM on maternal hypothyroidism, as an adequate supply of maternal thyroid hormone is critical to fetal development. (ZPID). |
