| Abstract | Explored whether mathematics performance, self-concept in mathematics, and value beliefs differentially relate to cognitive and affective math anxiety. A sample of 368 4th graders were assessed with a math anxiety scale including both affective and cognitive items, a self-concept scale, questions regarding math learning interest, and the German Mathematical Achievement Test for Third Graders (DEMAT 3+). Results from confirmatory factor analyses supported a differentiation between cognitive and affective constructs of math anxiety. Furthermore, results from multivariate regression analyses demonstrated that mathematics performance was differentially stronger negatively related to cognitive math anxiety than to affective math anxiety, whereas control beliefs related stronger negatively to affective as compared to cognitive math anxiety. In conclusion, suggestions for future longitudinal studies for investigation of differential patterns are recommended. (ZPID). |
