| Abstract | "This study examines the impact of skill sets on wage returns for professionals in China, utilizing an extensive dataset of online job postings. We categorize keywords from job advertisements into cognitive and social skills. Controlling for both firm fixed effects and occupation fixed effects, we find that cognitive skills are associated with a 2.9% increase in wages, while social skills are associated with a 3.9% increase. Notably, among cognitive skills, while only 0.07% of the positions require critical thinking skill, it is associated with a 17.7% increase in wages. In the realm of social skills, both teamwork and negotiation are linked to returns in wages with an estimate of 4.4% and 3.8%, respectively. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the economic returns to specific skills in the labour market." The study refers to the period 2023-2023 (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku). |
