| Abstract | In the contribution, what could be called a 'textual turn' in the study of terms as items of special-language vocabularies is described. An emerging focus on text - its structures, its status as an object of study, its social aspects and relevance - marked the development of both translation studies and terminology as disciplines, from the 1980s onwards. The exigencies of translation as a text-based activity (albeit drawing inter alia on codified resources) focused attention on textual rather than the system-level characteristics more relevant to other practices such as the standardisation of scientific and technical terms. Developments are charted through some indicative publications of the 1990s and the start of the new millenium. (Verlag, adapt.). |
