AbstractThe paper addresses the questions of which languages can properly be considered varieties of English, discussing the criteria which make them dialects of the world language or independent speech forms. The author then treats methods of how varieties can be delimited from each other to make them entities whose deviance can be properly described; here the author basically follows the accepted distinction between dialects and registers, based on different speech communities as against functions. How do attitudes relate to such differences, and what role do varieties play in forming national identities? The facts discussed in the paper are properties of texts, and therefore relate to language teaching. Answers involved are, amongst others, the decision on what variety to teach, what texts to select, how to treat deviances or errors produced by students, how to develop in the student a sense for variation and its functions and restricting this to the receptive competence and to seek schoolbook English as only one variety in a vast array of choices. The final chapter, then, directs the more general discussion to the use that the author's reflections can serve in the classroom; he takes a few passages of 'literary dialect' as specimens for didactic arguments.
