Abstract | Chapter 14 deals with the potential of a specific Czech sports programme, Football for Development, for fostering social cohesion in one of the regions in the Czech Republic. Since the concept "social cohesion" is not commonly used in the Czech language, Chapter 14 first explores various understandings of social cohesion by the Czech population as presented in an academic study. Following the introduction of the Football for Development programme and its goals, the results of the field research are presented, enquiring into the meaning of social cohesion shared by the Football for Development programme's youth participants and stakeholders. Afterwards, all three data sets are linked: the understanding of social cohesion among the Czech population, the goals of the Football for Development programme as identified in its curriculum document, and the constituting factors of social cohesion according to the analysis of the programme participants' and stakeholders' understandings. Thus, we further elaborate on the potential of the Czech sports programme Football for Development to facilitate social cohesion among its participants, children, and youth from socially disadvantaged environments.
