Abstract | Chapter 3 introduces the concept of public familiarity - emphasising the importance of superficial, fleeting social interactions - to broaden the view on the social impact of (community) sport and the way the social impact of (community) sport can be studied and put into practice. The assumptions underlying the idea that community sport offers a solution to a lack of social cohesion are problematic. Focusing on public familiarity can help overcome some of those issues. Chapter 3 starts with a problematisation of the perception of social cohesion as the glue to mend "broken" communities and the normative use of social cohesion that results from this. Furthermore, Chapter 3 addresses the importance of incorporating a structural approach when looking at sport as a means to create social impact. By appreciating and transforming relevant power structures around community sport and the role of public familiarity in relation to networks of academics, policymakers, and professionals, we can further the understanding and practice of building resilient, inclusive, and healthy societies through sport.
