Abstract | In this chapter the author will briefly review some of the key ideas that have been linked to university over time. This will involve terms such as autonomy and academic freedom, but also notions such as truth and the scientific method. Some of these ideas are currently under threat, as recent years have seen a growing scepticism with science overall and the value of the scientific method. Higher education institutions therefore need to review their own purpose and the values they uphold. If they are motors for societal development, then society will expect them to adhere to certain values and be transparent about what they do, which seems particularly important when norms are being politically challenged.
