Abstract | This essay continues the discussion initiated in a previous work (Tyson 2023) on the relationship between anthroposophy, Bildung, and Steiner pedagogy, this time approaching the topic through a narrative and exemplifying lens. Focusing on the anthroposophical concepts of reincarnation and karma, which are central to Steiner's philosophy, the essay examines how these ideas have been misapplied in pedagogical settings. The author critiques instances where teachers invoked karma to justify inaction in situations where students were suffering, thus raising concerns about the ethical implications of such reasoning. The essay argues that such interpretations of karma can lead to harmful, fatalistic practices that undermine the transformative and progressive ideals of Steiner education. Instead of presenting a definitive conclusion, the essay offers these reflections as a means to further the discussion on how anthroposophical concepts should be responsibly integrated into educational practice. |
