Abstract | The archaeologist Ernst Curtius (1814-1896) led the great German excavation of Olympia between 1875 and 1881. The sports official Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937) is considered the founder of the modern Olympic Games. In this article, the background and the development of their respective preoccupation with the ancient city of Olympia and the Olympic Games are reconstructed. Subsequently, their interpretation of the relationship between religion and sport will be examined. It becomes clear that Curtius considered the Olympic Games to be 'civilizing' and thought of it as a model for his present, while Coubertin regarded the ancient Olympic Games as an example of the so-called religio athletae, which he promoted in his present to be the ideal of sport and also a socio-political 'cure'.
