Abstract | In this paper the economic knowledge of German and Chinese high school students is analyzed. 723 students from China and 991 students from Germany were assessed. The German and Chinese versions of the US-American Test of Economic Literacy (TEL4) were used to measure economic knowledge. The paper presents findings from the adaptation of the test instrument in both countries. Measurement invariance analyses for the items from the TEL4 in both countries are shown. The results of multi-level analyses point out that both in Germany and China the educational background of the parents and an interest in economic topics have an effect on economic knowledge. Differences between the two countries can be seen in the effect of gender. In Germany, male students achieve better results. In China, on the other hand, female students outperform male students in economic knowledge. The paper concludes with an interpretation of the findings, an analysis of the limitations of the study and implications for economic education in China and Germany. (DIPF/Orig.). |
