| Abstract | The "Duden" is one of the most basic tools for anyone dealing with the German language. Yet, most users know very little about the genesis of this work and its place in German cultural and publishing history. The study reviews the development of the "Duden" from the turn of the century to the present, with emphasis on historical and cultural aspects rather than linguistic ones. The study also focuses on the publishing empire that in post World War II Germany has evolved around the trademark "Duden." It shows that the "Duden" in its various manifestations is, indeed, a reflection of 100 years of German history. (Verlag, adapt.). |
