Abstract	Die kontrovers diskutierte Frage, ob von Jugend im Singular oder im Plural zu sprechen sei, wird beantwortet durch die analytische Unterscheidung zwischen historisch und sozial variierenden Formen und der spezifischen Strukturlogik von Jugend: Einerseits sind in diachroner und in synchroner Perspektive mannigfach variierende Bedingungen, Praktiken und Verläufe beobachtbar. Andererseits können, so die zentrale Argumentation des Beitrags, diese empirisch differierenden Gestaltungen des Übergangs und der sozialen Entwicklungsräume zwischen Kindheit und Erwachsenenpositionen nur im Lichte einer Theorie der Jugend (, im Singular') angemessen begriffen werden. Die Diskussion generativer Ermöglichungsbedingungen für adoleszente Entwicklungen wird im letzten Teil verknüpft mit einem Ausblick auf Wandlungen von Jugenden im Horizont zeitgenössischer Krisen. The article answers the controversial question of whether to speak of youth in the singular or in the plural by making an analytical distinction between historically and socially varying forms and the specific structural logic of youth: On the one hand, widely varying conditions, practices and processes can be observed from a diachronic and synchronic perspective. On the other hand, according to the central argument of the article, these empirically differing forms of transition and social developmental spaces between childhood and adulthood can only be adequately understood in the light of a theory of youth ('in the singular'). The discussion of generative enabling conditions for adolescent development is linked in the final section with an outlook on the transformation of youth in the context of contemporary crises.
