Abstract	Although a number of sociolinguistic studies of the German language have touched upon the existence and equal status of the German standard varieties, the actual use of them in teaching German as a foreign language has not yet been investigated sufficiently. The reported study takes up the phonetic variants of German and their convergence types, especially in terms of language teaching. In the first place an investigation on the basis of questionnaires in Japan reveals the hegemonic status of the variety of Germany and insufficient instruction in the other German-speaking countries as well as their linguistic varieties. Further the phonetic convergence types of the German teachers from Austria are analyzed. This analysis will be interesting to the extent that in Austria there are at least two codified orthoepic norms coexisting i.e. Duden (Germany) and Österreichisches Wörterbuch (Austria), the application of which is dependent upon regional, social and situational factors. In order to explicate these phenomena, the author uses the term standard-hierarchy which has relevance to the inter-/intranational validity as well as the principles of efficiency and equality.
