| Abstract | The study departs from the assumption that the French conjunction lorsque, which is commonly thought to be used in a purely temporal sense, also has a conditional-temporal usage, something that is found especially frequently in technical language. It is precisely in statements formulating rules or laws, which are especially common in technical texts, that this semantic relationship is found. The study begins by presenting an overview of existing French-language studies dealing with the conjunction lorsque and with possible substitutes for it. The body of texts upon which the study is based consists principally of texts taken from economic journals, which are complemented by articles on linguistics and by excerpts from the daily newspaper "Le Monde". To begin with, the contents of the texts are analysed, with special attention being paid to those statements that constitute the meaning of the text and to the semantic relationships between them. In investigating the use of "lorsque", the author looks closely at the exact relationships between the contents of the relevant statements that are linked up by this conjunction. The object is to clarify whether the statements are related to one another in a purely temporal fashion, i.e. in their tense, or whether the semantic features governing a conditional coherence and possible iteration, features that are necessary for a conditional-temporal relationship, might not also obtain. The study establishes its underlying hypothesis: in the technical texts examined, lorsque is used almost without exception to express conditional-temporal relationships. (Verlag, adapt.). |
