Abstract	Previous research has shown that word stress in German is expressed primarily by duration and, less reliably, by fundamental frequency, formant structure, and overall amplitude. In the acoustic study the authors investigate voice quality as one further promising domain of word stress correlates. Building upon work by Sluijter, Stevens and van Heuven, they investigated spectral properties that enable them to infer laryngeal and sublaryngeal activity during the production of word stress from the acoustics. Results indicate that spectral tilt, measured as the amplitude difference between the first harmonic and either the second or the third formant is significantly steeper in unstressed than in stressed syllables. These results emphasize the importance of measuring the amplitude correlate of word stress not as overall signal intensity but with respect to the balance between amplitudes in the low-frequency and the mid-to-high-frequency domain of the spectrum. It is discussed how the results can provide an explanation of the familiar linguistic problem that vowel duration is of phonological importance both for the expression of the tense/lax opposition and for the expression of word stress in German and related languages. The fragment of a phonological analysis is presented in which a prominence tier, that is based on spectral tilt as an index of perceived loudness, influences the assignment of metrical structure in German.
