Abstract	Writing in a foreign language (FL) is a communicative task that involve the ability to put down a text by hand oder by keyboard, requires knowledge about genres specifically used in the target language, language capabilities such as grammatical, orthographic and textual knowledge, various strategies for planning, writing, and revising texts, and the ability to present a text. However, we cannot assume that all FL students are highly motivatd. Thus, teaching writing in a FL cannot only focus on writing texts that correspond to the conventions, but should also allow writers to explore the language in a creative way. This article gives an overview on FL writing instruction in lower secondary education that meets the requirements stated in the National Educational Standards (KMK 2003, 2004) and the Common European Framework of References for Languages (Council of Europe 2001) supplemented by new descriptors (Council of Europe 2018). In addition, the author addresses specific challenges to teaching writing in foreign language classrooms. Finally, consequences for teacher education and school parctice are considered.
