Abstract	In response to globalization and the Bologna Process, English-medium degree programs have become an integral part of German higher education. Hence, the question whether English classes in secondary school prepare domestic students for academic language proficiency is gaining increasing importance. The present study reports on an explorative needs analysis conducted in 2017 investigating (a) the academic language requirements at the beginning of an English-medium Bachelor's degree program at the University of Bremen and (b) in how far English upper secondary school and the Abitur (school-leaving qualification) in Bremen prepare students for these demands. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews with university lecturers (n=6) and upper secondary skills - that is, interwoven linguistic and cognitive skills - in the introductory phase of the study program. However, findings also indicate that secondary school education does not fully prepare students for the academic language demands of an English-medium program at university. (Verlag, adapt).
