| Abstract | In this paper, the author argues that matched modality tasks should be used when evaluating pragmatic knowledge. Moreover, she will argue that if we match the modality of elicitation tasks to the modality of the language event that we are simulating, most of the other variables will take care of themselves. A significant hurdle in the evolution of the field is for both experienced and novice researchers to make the choice of modality the primary decision in research design. The author will call this modality matching, and the resultant research design, matched modality. (Verlag, adapt.). |
