Abstract | To understand and explain the high attraction of being digitally connected with relevant others, the concept of "Fear of Missing Out" (FoMO) has received increasing research attention. It describes "a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent" (Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan & Gladwell, 2013, p. 1841). In this chapter, we describe theoretically and demonstrate empirically how FoMO influences the use of the mobile phone and internet in early adolescents between 10 and 14 years of age. Our results show that FoMO is an important predictor for a strong social use of the mobile phone and an overly high involvement with it, but it also increases the probability of communicating risky via the mobile phone by posting inappropriate things and participating in mobile phone bullying. Results are discussed in connection with the question what the concept of FoMO actually represents and where this fear might come from. (DIPF/Orig.). |
