Abstract | In 1991, Armenia proclaimed its independence after 70 years under the Soviet regime. Unfortunately, many unexpected internal and external problems, such as the military conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the blockade of Armenia's southern border by Turkey, brought this country into a big crisis. During the war, many politicians and clergymen started to use the images of classical enemies in order to mobilize the population and to legitimize the use of violence. Contemporary opponents were equated with ancient enemies. Conversely, Armenia's own fallen soldiers were glorified as national heroes and buried as martyrs with military and religious honors. This article analyses firstly the chapters in textbooks for History and Religion pertaining to the Armenian-Persian war from 451. In these media we see how children learn about the image of a historical enemy and about the process of sanctification of their own fighters. The second part of the article presents an example of national selfillustration in the schoolbook for Armenian literature. By means of the analysis of images of enemies in different textbooks, the article makes some suggestions how the problems of historical enemies, whose images are manifest in the Armenian society, might be overcome. |
