Abstract | As far as the history of mankind goes back, concepts of friends and enemies have always been part of human being. First, this fact is illustrated phenomenologically and thereafter proved by taking the occidental/Christian history as an example. Through the doctrine of the Old Testament, the pattern of friends and enemies is as well existing in the tradition of teaching of the Christian schools and in the schoolbooks. An exception of the concept of the enemy is the enemy of war. As schoolbooks deal with war to a large extend too, it is of great importance politically as well as pedagogically to look at the concepts of friends and enemies against this background. This article outlines the volume and the contents of the subject "war", starting about 1700 up to 2005, thereby particularly analyzing the concepts of friends and enemies. Finally, the result of the historical study is regarded from the perspective of evolutionary theory. It shows that humankind is dependent on thinking in concepts of friends and enemies, but that on the other hand there are chances to humanize the concept of the enemy, i.e. to solve existing conflicts peacefully. For this purpose, schoolbooks can be of great importance, too. |
