Abstract	The assessment and management of intercultural competence is notoriously difficult, above all in the context of foreign language teaching in public schools. In addition, outcome standards for intercultural competence have been established in the Educational Standards for the First Foreign Language and in curricula without being validated empirically. Nevertheless, the concept of intercultural competence is still one of the most important goals of foreign language teaching. Therefore, this paper argues that it is necessary to also establish input and opportunity-to-learn-standards if we want to assure the quality of the process and the outcome of intercultural learning in the foreign language classroom. It then discusses what kind of standards should be established for that purpose and in which areas. Moreover, it offers a typology of exercises and tasks for successful and efficient intercultural teaching and learning. Finally, the paper reveals the importance of intercultural competence and experience of the teacher himself, his attitudes and personality, in order to promote intercultural learning in class.
