Abstract | Investigated academic self-concept regarding the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) with 117,321 students in 4th- and 8th-grade students from 6 Western, 4 Asian, and 3 Middle Eastern countries. Data on students' math self-concept and from achievement tests were analyzed using structural equation models and multilevel confirmatory factor analysis. Results indicate BFLPE as negative impact of average performance on a student's academic self-concept for mathematics and science across both age cohorts for all 13 countries. (ZPID). |
