Abstract	In zwei Folgen stellt der Beitrag das Maltreatment Classification System (MCS) nach Barnett, Manly und Cicchetti (1993) vor, eines der wenigen international anerkannten und theoretisch sowie empirisch fundierten Klassifikationssysteme zur Erfassung von Misshandlung und Vernachlässigung im Kindes- und Jugendalter. Das MCS wird anhand eines Fallbeispiels aus der Jugendhilfe in seiner Anwendung im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes AMIS beschrieben. Im ersten Teil wird die Entstehung des MCS dargelegt und das Manual bis zu dem Item "körperliche Vernachlässigung" vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil des Manuals und ein Bericht über Erfahrungen in der Anwendung folgen in der nächsten Ausgabe. This paper focuses in two consecutive articles on the Maltreatment Classification System (MCS), as developed by Barnett, Manly and Cicchett/(1993).The MCS is one of the few internationaly recognized and empirically validated systems to evaluate abuse and neglect in childhood and adolescence. Following a theoretical introduction to the MCS, it describes its application to a case from the child protection services, assessed as part of the research project AMIS. Close attention is paid to the special challenges facing the adaptation of the MCS to a German context. In the first part the development of the MCS is portrayed. It contains a description of the manual to the item "physical neglection". The second part reports the experiences of the MCS in practical use. It will be published in the next issue of this Journal.
