Abstract | The present contribution offers a survey of recent changes in the definition, conceptualization and application of media literacies, from literary literacy to various forms of multimodal and multimedia multiliteracies. It argues in favour of defining and applying different forms of media competence as an interdisciplinary project. It can be argued that providing learners with such skills is one of the most essential teaching-learning objectives in today's globalized and media-shaped FLT environments. In addition, the ubiquitous and all-pervasive impact of the media, especially through hybrid, digital forms such as the Internet, the World Wide Web and the interactive Web 2.0 demands the close cooperation of Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants to bridge the digital divide that seems to jeopardize the information exchange between today's teachers and learners. In this context, the rapidly changing definitions and conceptualizations of media competence need to be constantly adjusted to meet current demands of the FL classroom. (Verlag). |
