| Abstract | This article examines the influence of methodological competencies on the French reading performance of ninth and tenth graders in Germany. Students (N = 866) completed a competence test and a questionnaire. The questions in the questionnaire assess the frequency with which students deal with French texts in a differentiated way, i.e., by using methodological knowledge such as skimming and scanning strategies. Results show that in 2008, students applied certain methods to unknown texts repeatedly. Furthermore, the students' reading performance is correlated with their subjective assessment of the frequency and intensity of training presented in the questionnaire. Results show a statistically significant relationship between the use of methods when dealing with French texts and reading performance. The promotion of methodological competencies can thus be regarded as crucial in the domain of foreign language teaching. (Verlag). |
