| Abstract | Professional capital [means] the systematic development and integration of three kinds of capital-human, social, and decisional-into the teaching profession. [...] Professional capital is about collective responsibility, not individual autonomy; about scientific evidence as well as personal judgment; about being open to one' s clients rather than standing on a pedestal above them; and ultimately about being tough on those colleagues who after every effort and encouragement, fall short of their professional mission and let their peers as well as their students down. This book defines and fleshes out the essence of professional capital. Just as importantly, it shows how to develop professional capital, how to circulate it, and how to reinvest it so that you can help create a dynamic new profession that will benefit every school in the nation, whatever your country. [...] Professional capital, by definition, means having and building a system that will be truly great. [...] Professional capital pushes the limits of what teachers will be able to achieve for every child. (Orig.). |
