Abstract | The article contrasts 'grammar' and 'grammaring' in language teaching. Traditional 'grammar' means practising rules via drill, often with written exercises. Many students find it difficult to apply these rules and activate their knowledge in actual communication - an issue Alfred North Whitehead called "the inert knowledge problem". In contrast, 'grammaring' means to apply structures accurately and in a meaningful way appropiate to needs. The presented five examples are intended to clarify the contrast between 'grammar' and 'grammaring'. (Verlag, adapt.). |
