Abstract	The paper aims at reinterpreting and implementing the old question whether the specific properties of a language determine our culture and the way we think against the background of new developments in the field of cognitive science. Nowadays, conventional perspectives, which articulate a global impact of "language" on "thought" in a two-dimensional way are often circular and cannot be maintained, therefore, the corresponding hypothesis should be rejected. Instead, the author suggests a nuanced perspective. It provides for restricted interface functions in the language system hence licensing language-specific adjustments of non-linguistic conceptual structures in predefined domains. This viewpoint is compatible with current advances in cognitive research. Recent findings suggest that the combinatorial properties that we find in grammar are not restricted to the linguistic domain alone but operate in other, non-linguistic cognitive areas like the acquisition of new concepts as well. Accordingly, human language represents a prerequisite for advanced intelligent cognition. Further, the notion of cognitive modularity is seen in a more multi-faceted light today. This is reflected in recent approaches, which model domains like pragmatics traditionally considered non-modular and "central", as distinctive modules operating with domain-specific principles. The systematic theoretical implications of the new paradigms are discussed as well as the insights we gain from them for the answer to the initial question as to how the complex interplay between language, thought, and culture is to be designed.
