Abstract | In order to assist learners of foreign languages in vocabulary learning, it is generally considered helpful to teach vocabulary learning strategies in specific training sessions held during class time. The article examines which strategies should be presented to enable learners to make reasoned choices based on their own testing and evaluation. An empirical study is reported which tested the relative efficiency of four frequently used vocabulary learning strategies: rote learning, visualization, the keyword technique and the use of gestures. The findings of this study have implications for vocabulary learning inside and outside the foreign language classroom as well as for the content of strategic training. (Verlag, adapt.). |
