Abstract	Language is the medium of content learning in all institutional settings, with an increasing number of learners doing their academic tasks in a second language or in some other language of which they have only a limited proficiency. Content and language integrated learning is therefore a goal that all educational and institutional settings will have to strive for, including those grassroots curricular concepts at the German secondary school level which are equivalent to what is known as "late partial immersion" in the anglophone world (= bilingualer Sachfachunterricht). Drawing on the insights of sociocultural theory, systemic functional linguistics and the genre approach, the article puts forward a framework for the integration of content, thought and language in "bilingual" subject-matter teaching. The intersection of the three domains yields a curricular unit (called discourse functions) which is of great "scaffolding" value in an analytic text and task based syllabus geared towards the integration of content and language.
