Abstract	The article aims to review the recent developments made so far in the field of 'autonomy in language learning'. Although L2 learner autonomy has benefited from many expert contributions, also in Germany, it runs the risk of being reduced to an issue principally of individual development, learning strategies or learning in cognitive isolation. Building on models developed by Benson (1997) and Oxford (2003), the author proposes a conceptual framework of learner autonomy for protecting the concept from narrow interpretations deprived of validity and revelance to language education. Thus, learner autonomy appears to refer to a concept of capacity, or rather a concept of autonomization, which (can) integrate(s) various interdependent perspectives depending on a given context, and which is based on a self-regulated relationship between the learner and the process and content of his or her learning.
