Abstract	Die Verbreitung von Depressionen und Ängsten unter Jugendlichen hat in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen. Beeinflusst die Schule jenseits der Leistungsentwicklung auch die psychische Gesundheit von Schülern? Und wie macht sie das? Der Autor geht der Frage nach, welche Aspekte dieser für das Jugendalter zentralen Entwicklungsumwelt Risikofaktoren für Ängste, depressive Symptome und psychosomatische Beschwerden darstellen. Es wird ein Modell vorgestellt und empirisch überprüft, das mögliche Wirkmechanismen beschreibt. Die gefundene enge Kopplung zwischen Klassenklima und internalisierenden Auffälligkeiten wird zum Anlass genommen, Empfehlungen für eine gesundheitsförderliche Gestaltung von Schule abzuleiten und Vorschläge für eine Optimierung von Präventionsprogrammen zu machen. (DIPF/Orig.). School and mental health. Risk factors for internalizing problems in pupils. Background: School offers young people an important setting for coping with developmental tasks. Nevertheless, researchers have focused predominantly on the role of school in cognitive development. Less attention has been directed at examining school influence on internalised mental problems. Objectives: Does a negative class climate (unfavorable learning environment, non-supporting social climate) lead to increased levels of emotional problems and psychosomatic symptoms in youth? Is this association between class climate and internalised problems mediated by the pupils´ academic and social self-concept? In addition, can these school environmental influences on mental health be traced over a period of four years? Methods: The data derive largely from the Saxon sample of the international HBSC-study (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children) conducted in 2006. For this, 4 367 girls and boys from 221 classes (grade 5, 7, and 9) in 27 schools were surveyed by means of questionnaires. Results: Multi-level regression analyses show that emotional problems and psychosomatic symptoms are associated with class climate at the individual level. The strongest increases in problems can be found when pupils report being bullied or having overloading curricular demands. Analyses of a 4-year longitudinal subsample (n = 636, two waves) confirm the detrimental long-term effects of these two risk factors according to the hypothesis. Self-cognition as a mediator can only partly account for this relation. Conclusions: Taking care of and promoting the mental health of pupils should be an important aim of all schools. Accordingly, recommendations are made for improving learning environments. It is argued that including contextoriented interventions could help make school-based mental-health promotion more effective. (Orig./DIPF/ThOe).
